The Nernst Lamp ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY IN NON-METALLIC MATERIALS
نویسندگان
چکیده
The use of carbon and tungsten filaments mounted in vacuum as early incandescent lamps is well-known, but it is less often realised that an early competitor was Nernst’s ceramic lamp. This made use of the property that , although good insulators at room temperature, many oxides become partially conductive when strongly heated. This is due to the migration of ions rather than electrons, and was commonly considered a deleterious property. Nernst realised however that it might permit the construction of a sturdy incandescent lamp that did not require a vacuum. His early lamps embodied a thin rod of magnesium oxide, initially heated with a coil of platinum wire. Later, he used a modified composition based on zirconia. However, these ‘ceramic’ lamps were unable to compete with a new generation of ‘coiledcoil’ tungsten lamps with filaments mounted in low-pressure argon.

The electrical conductivity of Al2O3 under shock-compression
Sapphire (Al2O3) crystals are used below 100 GPa as anvils and windows in dynamic-compression experiments because of their transparency and high density. Above 100 GPa shock pressures, sapphire becomes opaque and electrically conducting because of shock-induced defects. Such effects prevent temperature and dc conductivity measurements of materials compressed quasi-isentropically. Opacities and ...
متن کاملQuantitative Disentanglement of the Spin Seebeck, Proximity-Induced, and Ferromagnetic-Induced Anomalous Nernst Effect in Normal-Metal-Ferromagnet Bilayers.
We identify and investigate thermal spin transport phenomena in sputter-deposited Pt/NiFe_{2}O_{x} (4≥x≥0) bilayers. We separate the voltage generated by the spin Seebeck effect from the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) contributions and even disentangle the ANE in the ferromagnet (FM) from the ANE produced by the Pt that is spin polarized due to its proximity to the FM. Further, we probe the depe...
متن کاملElectrical and Mechanical Performance of Zirconia-Nickel Functionally Graded Materials
In the present work, six-layered (Zirconia/Nickel) functionally graded materials were fabricated via powder metallurgy technique (PMT). The microstructure, fracture surface and the elemental analysis of the prepared components were studied, and their linear shrinkage, electrical conductivity, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness were evaluated. The results show that the linear shrinkage of t...

In this paper, the effect of adding aluminum trihydrate (ATH) on electrical (including dielectric constant, dielectric loss and strength, volume and surface resistivity) and hydrophobic properties of two-part room temperature volcanized (RTV) silicone rubber resin coatings were investigated. For this purpose, the RTV-ATH nanocomposite was made by physical mixing and its electrical and hydrophob...
متن کاملThermoelectric Performance Enhancement by Surrounding Crystalline Semiconductors with Metallic Nanoparticles
Direct conversion of thermal energy to electricity by thermoelectric (TE) devices may play a key role in future energy production and utilization. However, relatively poor performance of current TE materials has slowed development of new energy conversion applications. Recent reports have shown that the dimensionless Figure of Merit, ZT, for TE devices can be increased beyond the state-of-the-a...
